Dr. Houser was hired as a tenure-track faculty member in 2004 in the Department of Communication Studies. From 2004 to 2013 she served as the Basic Course Director of Communication 1310 and was awarded “The Basic Communication Course Award” by the National Communication Association.  She currently serves as the Associate Dean of faculty development and research for the College of Fine Arts and Communication. Dr. Houser has developed a national reputation as an expert in the field of instructional communication, with a special emphasis on student learning and the student-teacher relationship. She won the university's Mariel M. Muir Excellence in Mentoring Award in 2013. Dr. Houser currently serves as editor of Communication Teacher. She has published over 30 research studies in National, International, and Regional journals, presented over 50 Conference papers, and published three book chapters and one textbook. Dr. Houser has created and published scales in Learner Empowerment, Learning Indicators, Classroom Engagement, Student Participation and Teacher Training Effectiveness and these instruments are used throughout the communication, education and psychology disciplines. She is currently working with a group of Iranian scholars on best practices of instructional training programs for nursing students in Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Her work has been featured in Men’s Health Magazine and Psychology Today.
