Kelly Kaufhold is an associate professor of digital media innovation in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He came to Texas State University after three years at Texas Tech. He earned his doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was named the School of Journalism teaching assistant of the year. He won the top dissertation award in a division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication for research showing a novel way to use a news game to teach current events. 

Before becoming a professor, he worked as a multimedia journalist for 20 years in Ohio, Florida and Texas before returning to graduate school. He now teaches multimedia and data journalism, video production and visual literacy. He was principal investigator on a $600,000 state Medicare contract and his research has been published in the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Newspaper Research Journal, the International Journal on Media Management, the International Journal of Interactive Communication Systems and Technologies and elsewhere.
